I find it difficult to stay within the confines of classical photography. My inner artist puts me — the photographer — on like a glove and takes it upon himself to “improve” what I have done. Sometimes I manage to stay within the narrow limits of what is acceptable. And sometimes, as in the case of Van Gogh’s favourite sunflowers, I want to give myself free rein.
And you know what I spent the most time on at the Van Gogh Museum? On his palette. It’s as if by the colours mixed on the palette board you can figure out his secret. But the recipe for genius can’t be deciphered so easily. You can only try to make his images “your own”. That’s why I love homage
